PEM Fuel Cell Generators
How PEM Fuel Cell Generators Work
Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert hydrogen and oxygen directly into electricity, heat and water. A thin polymer membrane acts as the electrolyte, conducting protons while a platinum-based catalyst drives the reaction at 60–80°C:
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O + Electricity + Heat
Because the reaction is electrochemical rather than combustion-based, PEM generators produce zero CO2, NOx and particulate emissions at the point of use — only water vapour and warm air. In a generator package, the fuel cell stack is combined with hydrogen supply, air management, power conditioning and control systems in a compact, often containerised unit.
Key Advantages
- Fast start-up and dynamic response — from cold start to full load in seconds or a few minutes, ideal for backup power and variable loads.
- High power density — compact stacks with excellent output per kilogram and per cubic metre.
- Excellent partial-load efficiency — maintains high efficiency across a wide operating range.
- Zero emissions, silent operation — no local air pollution and very low noise, enabling urban and indoor installation.
- Modular scalability — units from 1 kW to 100 kW+ can be combined into multi-megawatt containerised power plants.
- Proven track record — decades of deployment in mobility, material handling and stationary power.
Typical Power Ranges
| Range | Typical Use | Example Products |
|---|---|---|
| < 1 kW | Residential, portable power | Panasonic ENE-FARM (0.7 kW) |
| 1 – 50 kW | Telecom sites, small backup, residential | Panasonic PH1 (5 kW), Panasonic H2 KIBOU (10 kW), Plug Power ProGen 30 (30 kW) |
| 50 – 500 kW | Commercial buildings, data centers, construction sites | EODev GEH2 (88 kW), Plug Power ProGen 125 (125 kW), Toshiba 100 kW |
| 500 kW – 1 MW+ | Containerised multi-unit installations | Multiple ProGen or GEH2 units combined |
Applications
- Backup and emergency power for hospitals, airports and data centers
- Telecom towers and mobile network backhaul
- Construction sites and remote operations
- Marine auxiliary and shore power
- Grid services and renewable integration
Selection Considerations
- Hydrogen purity and supply — PEM stacks typically require high-purity hydrogen (≥99.97%) and a reliable fuel supply chain.
- Water and humidity management — the membrane needs humidification; dehydration can reduce performance and lifespan.
- Ambient conditions — check operating temperature range and derating in hot or cold climates.
- Load profile — frequent starts and stops are a strength, but continuous high load requires correct sizing and thermal management.
- Total cost of ownership — consider stack replacement intervals, service contracts and hydrogen fuel cost alongside the initial capital outlay.
- Certifications — verify CE, UL, ISO 9001/14001 and local electrical and gas codes.
